Prescott Guide invites you to explore the history of Prescott's iconic Yavapai County Courthouse

Prescott Guide invites you to explore the history of Prescott and enjoy Everybody's Hometown.
When digging got underway for the foundation of the Yavapai County Courthouse, flecks of gold were found in the soil. It was discovered that a single ton would net two ounces of gold. This is just one of the interesting facts about this epic project. Prescott Guide invites you to explore the fascinating history of the Yavapai County Courthouse in Prescott.

Construction
Sources tell us that the construction of the Yavapai County Courthouse would not have stood up in court, had it been legally challenged. All of the bids for the job were over budget. As a result, the county supervisors worked with the lowest bidder and changed the specifications to lower the cost. The county attorney declared this illegal, but because the new building was so desperately needed, no one ever challenged the issue in court.

Materials
The source of granite for the courthouse was the local Larkin Quarry, which lies northwest of Rock Lane in Miller Valley. This native stone made outstanding building material, and expert masons from Scotland were brought in to handle the specialized work.

Gold!
Now, back to the gold discovered in the soil: since the discovery of gold caused the growth of the city, residents thought that the Yavapai County Courthouse being constructed on such ground was apropos. The dimensions of this field have never been fully determined. The entire downtown district of Prescott may well be sitting on a field rich in gold.
