Prescott Guide shares the history of Acker Night in Prescott

Prescott Guide invites you to explore everything Prescott has to offer as Everybody's Hometown. As a center for entertainment, theatre, music and the arts, Prescott’s night life is always spectacular. There is a traditional and festive night every year in Prescott, which features local talented musicians. This event is called “Acker Night.” Prescott Guide discusses the history of Acker Night in Prescott and how it has influenced Prescott’s culture.

"All the residue of my estate...I give to the City of Prescott to be used for parks and for promotion of music, particularly for children.” These words were part of the will of Prescott Resident, James S. Acker, who lived from 1865 until 1955.

During the 1930's James S. Acker operated a real estate company. He soon began to accumulate parcels of property in and around the community. By the time Acker died in 1955, he left behind a number of parcels of land to the City of Prescott. His desire was for these properties to be used for parks and music programs for children.

In 1988 Prescott resident LaVon Anderson, who was a strong advocate of a children's music program herself, had a dream to blend music and Prescott's historic downtown together in an annual event. Since the Christmas holidays and music are naturally attached, LeVon used that pairing to pioneer the J.S. Acker Musical Showcase. Following the first one held in December of 1988, the J.S. Acker Musical Showcase now features over 100 Prescott downtown businesses with over 100 musicians and performers who donate their time, talent and businesses for this event.

The event is all about music in the streets of Prescott, an event of fun, family and friendly tradition. The unified goal of the business owners and musicians is to keep Acker Night alive and thriving for the youth of Prescott.

Prescott Guide hopes you will take the time to explore more about the history of Acker Night, one of the most important events of “Arizona’s Christmas City.” Prescott Guide is here to make you aware of not only the artistic community, but all of the great things Prescott has to offer.
