Prescott Guide describes the flora of the Prescott community

Prescott Guide invites you to experience the flora of Prescott
When people think of Arizona, many think of endless deserts. You may have seen news footage of tidal waves of dust moving across cities, and though true, those instances are rare. Instead, Arizona's natural landscape includes rivers, lakes, canyons and snow-capped mountains, encompassing all manner of fascinating flora. Prescott Guide shares the wide variety of flora in the Prescott area.

Evergreens
Above 5,000 feet, and where rainfall is more than 16 inches annually, you'll find beautifully dense areas of hardy ponderosa pine. Prescott National Forest is only a short drive from the downtown area, and boasts of fragrant pine trees, Douglas fir, Pinyon juniper, oak and mesquite trees.

Fruit trees
Fruit trees grow well in Prescott and many local residents enjoy homegrown apples, pears, peaches and plums, along with berries and other fruits.

Flowering trees
A drive through Prescott neighborhoods at the beginning of spring will be a treat as the flowering purple leaf plum trees explode with pink blossoms. Not to be outdone, the Bradford pear tree blooms lovely white flowers. One of the most striking shrubs in the Prescott area is the red tip photinia, which is an evergreen during the colder months, and puts forth its bright red tips (aptly named) in spring. Springtime also brings out the flowing “cotton” of cottonwood trees. These towering shade trees can be found near the creeks that run through Prescott.

Roses
The Prescott area is famous for our easy-care roses. Because of the dry air and alkaline soils, we are able to grow better, more colorful and more fragrant roses without the disease and insect issues that plague gardens in more humid areas.
