Prescott, Arizona, did not exist when President Lincoln signed the bill that separated New Mexico from Arizona in 1863. Lincoln was likely aware of the historian William Hickling Prescott, whose books on Mexico and Peru were widely read. Lincoln was determined that any capital for the newly established Arizona territory would be located far from Confederate sympathizers in Tucson.

If you are a history buff, come walk the streets and visit the same places that famous Old West figures like Wyatt Earp, Bucky O’Neill, and Doc Holliday did. There are many exciting historical things to see in the very first Arizona Territorial Capital. Visit Fort Whipple and learn about the history of Arizona and the Old West.

There is a traditional and festive night every year in Prescott, which features local talented musicians. Granite Dells Prescott is a mile-high city, boasting scenic areas of pine forests, lakes, hills, and interesting rock formations. Granite Dells, just north of Prescott, is perhaps one of the most unique areas, with its lumpy, pink boulders that seem to rise out of the Watson Lake and Willow Lake areas. Peavine Trail winds through the area, named because its shape is that of a pea vine. Granite Mountain Just a short distance to the west, Granite Mountain stands at 7,628 feet and covers approximately 12 square miles.
