Prescott Guide invites you to explore Thumb Butte trail in Prescott
Just a hop, skip and jump away from downtown Prescott, lies the quickly recognizable Thumb Butte. Visible from almost every direction, Thumb Butte is a favorite destination among the locals and if you're a newcomer to the area who likes to hike, Prescott Guide would love to introduce you to our legendary local landmark, Thumb Butte.
Because of its proximity to Prescott's infamous downtown, also known as The Square, Thumb Butte Trail is one of the area's most popular and heavily-used hiking trails in the Prescott National Forest. There are many signs along the trail to identify the diverse vegetation including manzanita, ponderosa pine and scrub oak as well as signs that enlighten trail hikers in forest ecology including the plentiful snakes and birds that can be found in the area.
The View
A popular trail among proficient hikers is Trail #33. It offers a steep climb to a ridge that rests just below the crest of Thumb Butte. From the ridge at Groom Creek Vista, hikers can delight in the panoramic and phenomenal views of the entire Prescott area including the Sierra Prieta and Bradshaw Mountain ranges, Granite and Mingus Mountains. On one of our more than 275 days of sunshine, you can see all the way to Flagstaff's San Francisco Peaks. The spectacular views are the icing on the cake.
The Hike
Be warned though, the climb up to Thumb Butte's very top is reserved for the most ambitious. Not to worry if steep climbs aren’t your thing. There are many trails to choose from, so even the novice is able to enjoy Thumb Butte.
The Wildlife
Beautiful peregrine falcons, during certain times of the year, are known to nest on the rough, basalt cliffs and rock faces of Thumb Butte. In order to protect their habitat, hikers may find some routes closed. For their sake and yours, it's important to obey every posted sign.
